Project Overview

The significant scale of the needs in China are three-fold: (1) air quality improvements; (2) a sustainable, reliable and renewable fuel source for their growing energy needs; and (3) social economic needs. The BioPro Power business and project models directly address those needs. In addition, we are drawn to the speed at which China will significantly focus their efforts to pursue solutions and solve issues proactively.

BioPro Power is pleased to be introducing our proprietary biomass logistics and combustion processes to the China market as our first and foremost target. Our goal is to deploy our technology throughout the Asia Pacific region using the various biomass streams that are common there. China’s air pollution issues are severe at times. The significant contributor is the burning of coal, but the uncontrolled burning of biomass in farm fields also adds to the pollution issues. Our investments in sustainable steam and electric power production will combust that same biomass fuel to produce energy while also controlling and collecting damaging particulate emissions, and emitting an estimated 92% less net CO2 than the equivalent coal fired generation. This will minimize the impact of the current essential power needs by creating a much smaller carbon footprint. Our programs will begin with combusting corn stover and are adaptable to other opportunity biomass streams as well.

Typically when one thinks about renewable power/electricity in China, the first thing that comes to mind is wind and solar, which are both great sources of clean energy. However, neither wind nor the sun is available 100 percent of the time. Thus, the base load power needs required in China are currently served mostly by coal, along with natural gas and, in certain areas, hydroelectric. BioPro Power plans to create corn stover (or other biomass) fueled energy plants that can provide reliable and sustainable base load electricity while at the same time reducing the carbon emissions from the current practice of using fossil fuels.

The BioPro Power program helps to alleviate rural poverty through paying higher than average wages for workers, as well as the creation of economic value for the biomass material itself; both of which procure higher social and environmental standards thus improving conditions where people live, work and play. This brings our triple bottom line, environmental, economic, and social progress, to full circle through the interaction realized from our program on the significant importance and shared interdependence of all three.

China Project Plan
BioPro Power will identify existing power generating assets that have operating difficulties, or are shut-down, in the primary corn growing regions of China, that might be leased or otherwise engaged in a partnership. Whether coal or biomass-fired, these plants will be analyzed for a retrofitted conversion to use BPP’s IP protected corn stover combustion recipe. Initially, BPP will target plant operations which will allow management and technology licensing fee income; and, potentially, to participate in the net income of plant. This approach reduces up-front capital by being able to use existing infrastructure to include power purchase agreements. By retrofitting existing plants, there is a shorter time getting plants generating power sales income than by building new greenfield plants. BPP would build new combustion systems when a retrofit would not work; and, on new greenfield project sites in the future
.
BioPro Power’s research indicates that a number of biomass plants are having problems making money in China. Causes for this include supply management and boiler tube fouling from the high alkali content in corn stover. BPP has significant expertise and owns Intellectual Property including Know-How, Trade Secret, and US and China Patents that protect the technology for these problem areas.

To source the stover, BPP would partner with large-scale farming operations or farmer-cooperatives. BPP will manage the stover harvest campaign to maintain quality control and will hire local farmers as an added benefit for rural economic development. Coop members will earn money by selling their stover on a heat content basis and, potentially, could earn a share of the power plant profits. Such incentives will help ensure the local farmers commitment to the long-term stover fuel supply.

BioPro Power
